| DC APA FIlm Festival
apparently, the entire program kicks ass this year. (as opposed to last year's) but here are some recommended shits:
* The Motel (picked up for theatrical release)
* Saving Face (already had a theatrical release)
* The Grace Lee Project (playing Pusan Film Festival (!!) right now)
* Shorts in the City (friday night program of short films.
comes very highly recommended from the festival programming committee)
* No Sleep till Shanghai (rap star Jin. the internet video
guy that clowned that one black dude in a freestyling
competition. did you ever see that clip? also featuring a
live performance at Club Daedalus.)
* Initial D (the U.S. premier! this movie based on the
popular anime series is pretty huge in asia right now. somehow, i
don't know how, but somehow we got the U.S. premier for this.)
* Face (some movie with Bai Ling (Entourage, Red Corner, Wild Wild West, The
Crow) and Treach (Naughty by Nature. i'm so down with OPP, bitch))
* Cavite (closing night film)
there are some parties too on both weekends, i believe (the festival is
10 days long). actually, there is an opening night reception at
this new place called K St. tomorrow. it's supposed to be this
svelt place. i'm looking forward to that and my friday morning
hangover.

| Paolo's in Georgetown sucks ass, FYI. the ribs at The Diner in Adams Morgan are surprisingly good.

here are the comments i left on the City Paper site along with some new comments.
Meze in Adams Morgan
"While the menu items were interesting and unique, the food could have
been prepared better. I had a Bosphorous Breakfast which consisted of a
plate of assorted meats, cheeses and other mediterranean items like
olives. The fresh items were quite tasty but the prepared items were
dry and overcooked to near uselessness as was my friend's omellette."
re--reading this i think i was a little too harsh. the fresh
items on my plate like tomatoes, cucumber, olives and cheeses and stuff
were all really tasty. and so was the fried spring roll type
thing. it had a turkish name that i can't think of right
now. it was this thin shell wrapped around goat cheese and other
stuff deep fried. that was ok. the meats though were cooked
like freaking crackers. slices of sausage and spiced pastrami
that were chewy, dry and hard. bleh.
Guajillo - Rosslyn/Courthouse
"Aside from the most uncomfortable dinner chairs and the wait staff that
acted more like pushy car salesmen, this was a pretty good restaurant.
of course, in order to disregard other drawbacks I had to concentrate
on the food which was quite yummy. The steak fajitas were marinated
well and not as tough as you would expect from a neighborhood Mexican
joint. My friend got the mole and he claimed that the chicken, right
down to the breast, was like butter. A worthy achievement."
yeah, that fucking waiter. i felt like vomiting the salsa on his face.
"would you like another beer?"
"no. i'm getting full already"
*five minutes later* "would you like a shot?"
"what???"
i thought he was going to buy me a shot for some reason then i realized
that he was suggesting the shot for its tight stomach economy.
then he came back five minutes later and asked me if i wanted another
beer. then he asked twice if we wanted dessert. i'll tell
you what i did want. i wanted to wipe my nuts on his
forehead.
good food though.
Manhattan Bar & Grill in Georgetown
"The food was overspiced. The kind of overspiced that has you panting
for a gallon of water to drink in the middle of the night. Personally,
I enjoy the flavoring of overspiced food but I can't say that I
consider any overspiced food to be fine dining. It's usually a tactic
used to mask some flaw in the food quality.
Service was polite when present but was rarely around or reachable to
provide what we needed. For the price I paid, I expected much better."
yeah that's pretty much how i feel about that one.
Ritz-Carlton in Georgetown
a friend and i had dinner in the lounge once. we had a cheese
plate, a sausage plate and a fried calamari plate. all were tiny
and the cheapest of those three was $16. the food tasted
good and all but there's no way i'm paying those prices for
appetizers. and look at what a shmuck i look like right
now. acting like i should have expected something different
eating dinner at the Ritz lounge...
